Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama earns another award from the NBA

Victor Wembanyama’s dominant play on the defensive end has earned him an award from the NBA.

The 7-foot-4 Frenchman was an easy choice for Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month for January after he recorded 132 rebounds, 29 blocks and 12 steals in 13 games, making him the only player in the conference to record 100+ rebounds, 25+blocks and 10+ steals.

His 2.23 blocks per games ranked third in the NBA while he averaged just 27.7 minutes per game. With Wembanyama on the floor, opponents shot just 42.4% compared 48.0% when he was off the floor.

It’s the second time Wembanyama has received the award since the NBA unveiled it in 2024-26. He also learned in January that he will represent the Spurs as a starter for the international team at the All-Star Game in Inglewood, Calif., on Feb. 15.

For the season Wembanyama is averaging 24.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.71 blocks in 28.9 minutes. He ranks first in the NBA in blocks per game and fourth in rebounding. Wembanyama has recorded three-plus blocks in 16 games and has had at least one block and one steal in 22 contests.

As of Tuesday, the Spurs rank fourth in opponent field goal percentage (45.6%) and sixth in the NBA in opponent points per game (111.9). The Spurs are 27-11 when holding opponents under 110 points and 23-7 when they win the rebounding battle.

The other nominees for the award were the Los Angeles Clippers’ Kris Dunn and Kawhi Leonard, Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert, Phoenix’s Jordan Goodwin, Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren and Houston’s Amen Thompson.

Detroit guard/forward Ausar Thompson was the winner in the Eastern Conference.
